The Story Behind Our Yarns

"There are some parts of the world that, once visited, get into your heart and won't go. For me, India is such a place."
Keith Bellows, National Geographic Society

There is no place as diverse as India, it shakes you from all sides. From the emotional sadness at the disparities of wealth to an immense feeling of fun with laughter shared with the people that you meet there. From the vast technical sophistication to the different levels of standard of living. India is raw, it is extreme, it is humanity. It is an unforgettable experience.

At Knitsilk, we are passionate about silk, knitting and design.

Our aim remains to offer a selection of high quality yarns, which are a pleasure to knit with and to wear, and simultaneously aid women co-operatives of rural India in earning their livelihood.

Most of our yarns are handmade in small lots and endure extensive quality control. Knitsilk hand-selects women and families in India for their skill and offers them appropriate means to support their families and improve their living conditions.

By allowing these women to work from home, Knitsilk has the ability to spread employment opportunities to people who might not otherwise have the chance.

Our skilled women don't spin yarn for groups of tourists or artists interested in learning the wonders of the textile industry that India is famous for. They spin as it is their only source of income.

We can glamorise spinning by traditional ways with drop spindles and charkas. We can glamorise the colours, the smiles, the talent, but in fact we are humbled, repulsed, emotional and shocked and yet excited and amazed at their talent!

Our ethical yarns are eco-friendly and recycled - handmade by women's co-operatives and small communities in rural India. We aim to support and provide sustainable living within these communities.

Knit with love. Knit with Knitsilk.
